Updates on What's Up in The Imagery World

I try to spend some time once a month to write down some tips, some stories, some lessons learned... as well as advice on when best to utilize us for specials and upcoming events.  We now have a complete book that can be ordered on Amazon called, "Prepare for your Perfect Portrait", and pieces of that will be posted on a weekly basis.  You can order your own full copy on Amazon, eBook or paperback.  Enjoy! -Stephanie Oman, Co-Owner, The Imagery.

Preparing for Professional Headshots When You Have Facial Hair

You’ve finally scheduled your headshot session with a professional photographer, but what should you do about your facial hair?

There are no hard and fast rules that state you need to get rid of your facial hair, but it helps to consider both a shaved and unshaved look before your shoot. Your headshots are going to be relevant for at least the next two years after all.

The Shaved Look

If you choose to shave your facial hair, it’s highly recommended that you go for a professional shave. Yes, you know how to do it, but a professional shave will ensure you don’t miss any spots and that you don’t end up with cuts or ingrown hairs on the day of your headshot session. Remember, your photographer is shooting with high-definition cameras, which pick up on the smaller details.

Plus, everyone feels more confident and relaxed after a professional shave, exactly what you want on the day of your shoot.

If you do decide to shave on your own, make sure you have the right products, including aftershave to help soothe your skin afterward. You should also aim to shave at least an hour before your shoot to ensure that any redness has subsided. Staying hydrated will also help your skin look and feel its best.

The Unshaven Look

If your facial hair is an integral part of your look, schedule a grooming session before your headshot session. Again, it’s always better to schedule a professional grooming session for the best results. A barber has all the right tools available for a smooth finish.

Something you should keep in mind if you have a 5 o’clock shadow that hides or distorts your jawline, you might want to consider a shaved look for more striking photos.

And if you have the time and would prefer to have options, you could always take some photos with facial hair and a few without to decide which look you want to present to the world.

(First written in 2020):

As Father's Day is here, I am reminded of all the reasons we get family photos done.  Around Mother's Day, and Father's Day, we often get calls for family photos, as the next popular time to fall leaves and the holidays.  Instead of a grill or a lawn mower this year, consider a portrait.  We know, dads don't necessary LOVE having their photo taken, in fact, they can be some of the biggest complainers when it comes time to taking the picture--but I have yet to meet a dad, that loves his kids, that has EVER REGRETTED, having the final picture picked up when the ordering was done.  They never regret it, are always happy that it was taken, and are some of the softest hearts on delivery day.

Well worth it.

By The Imagery

The Imagery has photographed dance schools and sports teams for decades, but in March of 2020, the logistics of team photography had singularly sharp turn.

It occurs to me that there may be a number of teams and schools out there that are simply skipping their normal 'picture day' plans for the assumed impossibility of how the logistics would come together.  And so did we, for a time.  The stay-at-home order had us all frozen for all activity until June.  When June came, and the phone lines opened again, there was frequently silence.  There was a strong uncertainty still prevalent throughout any industry, much less a 'non-essential' one like photography.  Unfortunately, once the HS Senior has had their last game played, all they have for generations to come are the photos that were taken of the action, or the panoramic poster of the final assemblage of their team, or that banner of their Senior year that only HS Seniors get and under-classman covet.

But slowly, we did small projects.  The Burnsville High School baseball team, one or two players at a time, individual photos taken on a plain white background, which was later created into a poster and banner for their team.  The Prior Lake Cheerleaders, in for their annual photo shoot, and the Blazette Dance Team, photos in the park, socially distanced as well.

The challenge is met by doing most photos with a one-at-a-time approach, online viewing and ordering (touch free ordering), and compositing individuals together to create the same great 'group shots', only they weren't really in a group at all.

We applied similar strategy when it came to our mini-Santa sessions.  Santa appeared on zoom for the interaction with the kids and taking this years special wishes, and when the photos where done, Santa was digitally composited into the picture of the 2020 kids, from Santa photos taken in 2019.  With a will there is a way.

With a little extra time on the back end of production, some skills and planning...we can do this thing.  Don't give up on the team just because they can't spend time shoulder to shoulder right now.

Until we are all hugging again,

The Imagery team
